Visual Upgrade

Native PSP vs. HD Upscaling

The original PSP outputs at 480×272 pixels. PPSSPP renders internally at multiples of that resolution, then scales to your display.

Native PSP (1×)

480×272 · Original hardware output

  • Low-resolution textures designed for a 4.3" screen
  • Visible pixelation and aliasing on modern displays
  • Minimal GPU load — runs on almost any device

PPSSPP HD (2×–5×)

960×544 to 2400×1360 · Emulator upscaling

  • Sharper edges and cleaner UI text at 2× or 3×
  • Texture scaling (xBRZ, Hybrid) further improves clarity
  • Post-processing shaders add CRT, bloom, or color grading
  • Higher multipliers need more GPU power — adjust per device

How it works: PPSSPP multiplies the PSP's internal framebuffer resolution before presenting to your screen. Combined with anisotropic filtering and optional HD texture replacement packs, games that looked soft on original hardware can appear crisp on 1080p monitors and Retina phone displays. Use per-game settings to find the sweet spot between visual quality and stable 60 FPS.
