Core Capabilities
Deep-Dive Feature Breakdown
Each card below explains what the feature does, when to use it, and how it improves your experience compared to playing on original PSP hardware or lightweight emulators.
HD Rendering & Upscaling
The PSP renders most games at 480×272. PPSSPP multiplies that internal framebuffer — commonly 2×, 3×, or higher — so geometry, UI, and effects scale cleanly to 1080p, 1440p, and 4K displays.
- Adjustable rendering resolution per device
- Buffered rendering for accurate transparency
- Frame skipping and auto-frameskip for weaker hardware
Save States & Fast Forward
Create instant snapshots at any moment and restore them with a hotkey — ideal for tough bosses, branching choices, or speedrun practice. Fast-forward accelerates unskippable cutscenes and repetitive grinding without altering game logic.
- Multiple save-state slots per title
- Separate from in-game memory-card saves
- Configurable fast-forward speed limits
Cheat Support (CWCheat)
Import community-maintained CWCheat database files to toggle codes for infinite health, currency, unlockables, and more. The in-emulator cheat menu lets you enable individual entries without editing files mid-session.
- Standard .ini cheat database format
- Per-title cheat folders
- Toggle codes on/off during gameplay
Adhoc Multiplayer (WiFi)
Recreate the PSP's ad-hoc wireless mode over local WiFi or through community infrastructure such as PRO Adhoc Server. Play Monster Hunter, Tekken, and other supported titles with friends on the same network or across the internet.
- Local LAN party support
- Online play via third-party servers
- Mixed PSP and PPSSPP sessions where supported
HD Texture Packs
Replace in-game textures with high-resolution replacements stored in per-game texture folders. Combined with internal resolution scaling and anisotropic filtering, texture packs can dramatically modernize the look of older PSP titles.
- Drop-in replacement textures per game ID
- xBRZ, Hybrid, and other upscale filters
- Anisotropic filtering for sharp oblique surfaces
Recording & Screenshots
Capture still screenshots or record gameplay footage directly from the emulator. Useful for sharing highlights, verifying compatibility, or building guides without external capture software on most platforms.
- One-key screenshot capture
- Built-in video recording on supported builds
- Output saved to a configurable folder
Post-Processing Shaders
Apply CRT scanlines, smoothing, sharpening, color correction, and other post-processing effects through the shader pipeline. Fine-tune the final image to match your display, from crisp LCD panels to nostalgic CRT aesthetics.
- Built-in and custom shader support
- Sharpening and anti-aliasing options
- Per-profile shader presets
Widescreen Hacks
Many PSP games render with black bars or a narrow field of view. PPSSPP includes game-specific widescreen patches and a general widescreen hack that stretches or expands the viewport to fill 16:9 monitors and ultrawide displays.
- Curated widescreen patch database
- Adjustable stretch and crop modes
- Works alongside HD resolution scaling
Per-Game Settings
Every title can store its own configuration — rendering backend, resolution, control layout, cheats, and compatibility hacks. RPGs, racers, and action games each get optimized profiles without changing your global defaults.
- Automatic settings per game ID
- Import and export config files
- Control profiles saved per title
Rewind
Step backward through recent gameplay seconds at a time — a lighter alternative to manual save states for recovering from mistakes. Hold the rewind hotkey to scrub back to a safer moment before a failed jump or boss attack.
- Configurable rewind buffer length
- Works alongside standard save states
- Ideal for challenging platformers and RPGs
Disc Streaming & Format Support
Load games from ISO, CSO, PBP, and CHD images without extracting them to loose files. CHD compression keeps large libraries manageable while streaming data on demand, similar to how a UMD would be read on real hardware.
- ISO, CSO, PBP, and CHD containers
- Multi-disc and DLC folder structures
- No mandatory full extraction step
RetroAchievements Integration
Connect your RetroAchievements account to unlock badges, leaderboards, and hardcore mode challenges while playing supported PSP titles. Progress syncs with the broader retro gaming community across platforms.
- Achievement pop-ups during play
- Hardcore mode disables cheats and save states
- Growing PSP achievement library
Linux & Steam Deck Optimized
PPSSPP ships native Linux builds for x64 and ARM64, making it a natural fit for Steam Deck, desktop Linux, and ARM-based handhelds. Vulkan delivers excellent frame rates in Gaming Mode, and full gamepad support maps cleanly to Steam Input for a console-like experience on the go.
Verified-friendly on Steam Deck via Proton or native AppImage
Vulkan backend for efficient battery use on handheld PCs
Full analog stick, trigger, and rumble mapping
